The Bad Plus
In 2001, a young jazz trio with Midwestern roots released an album on a small Spanish label called Fresh Sounds. And it was fresh, filled with early promise of three talented musicians with a rarely heard collaborative trio approach, beautiful original compositions, and jazz deconstructions of three familiar pop and rock songs. With their fiercely iconoclastic sound and brilliant original music, The Bad Plus have achieved a level of success that few jazz groups have ever attained. Eleven years later, they have justified the early praise. Through it all, one constant has been virtuosic piano playing by Ethan Iverson, passionate bass work by Reid Anderson, and rhythmic acrobatics by drummer Dave King.
