Artists for Action, Viva Arizona.org is pleased to announce its Phoenix Voter Registration Concert and Rally on August 27, 2010 at the Marquee Theatre with performances by Calexico, Miniature Tigers, Sergio Mendoza Y La Orkesta, Big Son featuring Sam Means of The Format and Jeff and Chris of Reubens Accomplice, Sand Rubies, Salvador Duran, Kinch, and Snow Songs! He claims that he and Gary Bennett formed a partnership after they met in a bar and had a contest to see who could sing the most Johnny Horton songs - not a bad reason to form a band. Ha Ha Tonka

Bloodshot recording artists Ha Ha Tonka roar out of the Ozarks with a bottle in one hand and a bible in the other. Mixing sanctified four-part harmonies and blistering rock, carving out songs that evoke the dichotomies that define their home. The Springfield, Missouri natives dubbed their new album Buckle in the Bible Belt in homage to their hometown, so named for its position on the dividing line of the Ozark states. Their dark view of the realities of socio-economic hardship, backwoods prejudices and drug abuse is leavened by wry humor and a deep appreciation for regional storytelling traditions.

Iamprimate is poet, musician and artist PJ Norman. Iamprimate takes, as a starting point, the idea that avant-garde music is trapped by the oxymoron of post-modernism, and that popular music is enslaved by its reliance on market forces. The project aims to reconcile avant-garde composition into a coherent statement within popular music by placing popular elements into a space that is affected by avant-garde treatments, such as the use of location recordings and sound-concrète.

Mimicking Birds w/ St Ranger, Bears of Manitou

Mimicking Birds released their debut album earlier this year on Isaac Brock's Glacial Pace label. While Brock played throughout most of the record, the real star is singer/songwriter/guitarist Nate Lacy. His gentle guitar plucking and crooning remind us of Iron and Wine meets Chad Vangaalen.

Local act St Ranger opens the show, and locals Bears of Manitou will be performing as well.

Tempe's Kat Schuett has been vocally likened to a cross of Diana Krall and Ella Fitzgerald. Her sound meshes together styles such as funk, jazz and neo-soul.

Smile Smile

Ryan Hamilton and Jencey Hirunrusme formed Smile Smile in Dallas, Texas. The duo crafts their blend of folk, pop and rock with a desire to fill in the void they felt was present in folk and pop. The result is music than easily changes gears from mellow folk ballads to foot-stomping rock.

Rachel Goodrich and Sydney Sprague

Opening this show will be Sydney Sprague, formerly of Phoenix and now living in Austin. A talented singer, guitarist and songwriter, she plays a nice style of acoustic alternative rock. Rachel Goodrich hails from Miami Beach and plays a myriad of instruments, including the guitar, ukulele, piano, kazoo, banjo and autoharp. Her brand of acoustic folk will fit perfectly at the Compound Grill.

Junior Brown (early show)

A lot of people tell me they don't like country music, but they like what I am doing," says Junior Brown. "I hear that line more than anything else," which is ironic because a couple of licks is all it takes to erase any doubts concerning Junior's stylistic allegiance. His music combines the soul of country and the spirit of rock n' roll.
Following years as Austin's best-kept secret, then a few more as the town's one must-see act for visiting musicians and label heads, Junior Brown and his music have since found an audience far beyond the Lone Star border. Junior's first two albums (12 Shades of Brown and Guit With It) have helped establish him as a crowd favorite from Texas roadhouses to the hippest clubs of New York City and Europe.

This show is during First Friday, so if you are downtown that night, come up to Camelback from 6-9PM and check out these bands!

A donation is recommended for the touring bands so they can survive on the road.

This artist has gone from working in a furniture factory and fighting four-time world champion boxer Roberto Durán, to signing with and being dropped by a major label. He has opened for Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler and John Prine. With nine albums to his credit, Paul Thorn has crafted plenty of emotional and accessible music.
