    Jay Som

On her first proper album as Jay Som, Melina Duterte, 22, solidifies her rep as a self-made force of sonic splendor and emotional might. If last year's aptly named Turn Into compilation showcased a fuzz-loving artist in flux -- chronicling her mission to master bedroom recording -- then the rising Oakland star's latest, Everybody Works, is the LP equivalent of mission accomplished.

Duterte is as DIY as ever -- writing, recording, playing, and producing every sound beyond a few backing vocals -- but she takes us places we never could have imagined, wedding lo-fi rock to hi-fi home orchestration, and weaving evocative autobiographical poetry into energetic punk, electrified folk, and dreamy alt-funk.

And while Duterte's early stuff found her bucking against life's lows, Everybody Works is about turning that angst into fuel for forging ahead. "Last time I was angry at the world," she says. "This is a note to myself: everybody's trying their best on their own set of problems and goals. We're all working for something."

With locals Hyperbella. Tickets online and at STINKWEEDS.

Xixa hones in on new sounds in very old places, regardless of bloodline. Brian Lopez and Gabriel Sullivan have been at the forefront of the Tucson scene for a number of years - as solo artists, sidemen, producers and members of Howe Gelb's Giant Sand. Four years ago, inspired by Peruvian Cumbia, Brian and Gabriel dedicated themselves to the exploration of the hard edge, guitar-driven trippy cumbia known as Chicha. After a few years of playing as Chicha Dust - and becoming one of Tucson's most popular band - the group renamed itself XIXA and started writing all new material, mixing their rocking past and their passion for psychedelic cumbia - creating a sort of desert rock with a Latin edge and a strong taste for hallucinogenic experimentation.

In the simplest terms, decker. is a singer/songwriter based in Sedona, Arizona. A more apt description, however, would be to call him a musical mystic. He himself describes his sound as “psychedelic desert folk,” drawing inspiration directly from the vortexes of the red rock mountains and canyons where he resides—an area so widely known for its resounding energy that millions of spiritual travelers flock there every year in an attempt to harness its power.

With MR. MUDD & MR. GOLD, GABRIELLE LOUIS. This show is 21+ Tickets at STINKWEEDS and online.

Healy captures a distinct perspective of the overburdened artist, reluctant to find his worldly pace brought to a screeching halt.Tracks like Reckless and Build are nostalgia-ridden recounts of pool days, popsicle-stained faces, and reflections on growth and appreciation of one’s upbringing. These motifs fully permeate Healy’s life as Memphis is deeply rooted within his artistic acumen. His music exudes the soul and emotion known only to those familiar with the musically-maternal figure of the blues and rock ‘n’ roll. With this emotion, as well as his unprecedented sonic landscape, Healy is bringing the unique ethos of Memphis into an autonomous role in popular culture.
